On the slightly later date than usual of 17 May 2023, the World Traders’ 36th Annual Tacitus Lecture, Populism, Poverty and Hope in the 21st Century, was given by Rory Stewart OBE, academic, diplomat, writer and former Member of Parliament.

Once again taking place at the historic Guildhall, Master Michael Shapiro introduced this year’s Lecture, thanking our sponsors, members and guests before handing over to the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Nicholas Lyons, who shared his own insights on the evening’s theme.

“Every year, we’re lucky to receive Lectures which never shy away from the important issues of the day.” – Nicholas Lyons, 694th Lord Mayor of the City of London

Throughout his speech, Rory drew a poignant comparison between the 36 years in which the Lecture has taken place, and how influential those same years have been in shaping our modern world – and the state of global poverty as we see it today.

“The timeframe for which the Tacitus Lectures have been going produces an extraordinary way of looking at how the world has changed in a very short period of time.” – Rory Stewart OBE

Now in its 36th year, the Tacitus Lecture continues to be a highly popular event in the City of London, attracting senior business leaders, members of organisations and institutions, educational establishments and many more year after year.

You can watch the Lecture in full and see a selection of photos from the night here.

The Worshipful Company of World Traders wishes to warmly thank the sponsors of this year’s Tacitus Lecture.

London Chamber of Commerce & Industry – Silver Sponsor

Alembic Strategy, Coutts and Co-Counsel – Bronze Sponsors

Without the support and partnership of these organisations, the Tacitus Lecture, its incredible insights, and the positive impact it has on the Company’s educational and charitable initiatives would not be possible.
