The Worshipful Company of World Traders gathered in the extraordinary surroundings of London Zoo’s new Reptile and Amphibian House on Tuesday 13 October 2026 for the Master’s At Home, a memorable evening of fellowship, discovery and thought-provoking discussion, celebrating Richard Burge’s year as Master.

The venue held particular significance for The Master, who served as Director General of the Zoological Society of London from 1995 to 1999. It was therefore a fitting setting for an event that reflected one of the central themes of his Mastership: the responsibilities of world trade.

Surrounded by some of the world’s rarest and most remarkable reptiles and amphibians, guests enjoyed fascinating insights from Lucy, one of London Zoo’s keepers, who introduced the extraordinary creatures inhabiting the new facility.

Dr Mark Infield, Landscape Recovery Manager, delivered a thought-provoking presentation exploring the challenges of illegal wildlife trade, habitat destruction and species conservation. His talk also raised the complex and sometimes contentious question of whether carefully regulated legal trade might have a constructive role to play in conservation and sustainability – a particularly pertinent subject for the World Traders.

However, the unexpected star of the evening was undoubtedly Kevin the Crocodile, whose impeccably timed appearances and leisurely swims behind the speakers provided a wonderfully entertaining backdrop to proceedings. Kevin quickly established himself as the evening’s most photographed resident, proving that even the most serious discussions can benefit from a little theatrical intervention!

The evening brought together friendship, learning and lively conversation in a truly unusual setting. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on Richard’s year as Master, while exploring the wider responsibilities of international commerce and the delicate balance between trade, conservation and sustainability.

A fitting and thoroughly enjoyable celebration of a successful Mastership and certainly a Master’s At Home that will be remembered for years to come.
